Despite what you read on social media or hear from trending influencers, you can’t drop thirty pounds in two weeks, three weeks, or even four weeks the “healthy” way. There is no magic diet, and we all know that there is no real big secret to losing weight quickly and efficiently without facing some serious consequences for your physical and mental health, but these three trends are ineffective and can also be very dangerous. Don’t fall for the hype. Don’t follow the advice of anyone who tells you to do this:

Strict Calorie Counting or the 1200 Calorie Diet

First things first, when it comes to dropping weight, reducing your caloric intake is often necessary, but be careful with nutrient tracking. Calorie logging can quickly become an unhealthy obsession. We have seen so many clients over the years drive themselves crazy with the constant tracking, entering data into apps or food journals, letting these numbers dictate their every move. It is important to know how to read labels so that you can stay away from harmful ingredients, but don’t allow this method to stop you from eating just because you have already reached a specific calorie target for the day. Focus on the ingredients, not the macros. In most cases this dieting method doesn’t work because most people quit within the first few weeks. It becomes too stressful. AND, staying in a constant calorie deficit has some serious side effects too. Your metabolism will slow down, and you can end up gaining even more weight.

One Food Diets

This just sounds awful, right? That’s because it is! A mono diet is when you consume only one ingredient for days, even weeks, usually called the cabbage diet or the banana diet. We even had one customer reach out to us for help after they ate nothing but steak for 30 days. You don’t even want to know about the health issues that individual was having after a month. Variety is key! You may lose weight eating nothing but cabbage for a month, but you will be malnourished, and you will not feel good. Listen to your body.

Use Diuretics

Diuretics work through the kidneys to temporarily reduce water weight. Essentially, they force more urine out of your body. They do not help you to shrink fat cells and they certainly do nothing to help you gain energy, replenish your body after a workout, or help you grow new cells. Protein and Vegetables do. Regular use of diuretics can lead to longer-term health complications and in some cases even hospitalization.

So, bottom line…trust your doctor, talk to a certified dietitian, or licensed nutritionist. Do your own research too. Diet trends come and go for a reason, but the one solid, tried-and-true method to living a healthier lifestyle and dropping weight safely is to eat REAL FOOD, move functionally (walking, hiking, bike riding, dancing, etc.), stop eating when you are full, and to, most importantly, give yourself grace. Give yourself patience. These things take time, especially if you want to lose the weight and keep it off.
